The building was a gift from the American people to the city of Leuven and to KU Leuven.
The attack of 1914 aroused great indignation at home and abroad and thanks to numerous, mainly American, collection campaigns, with the personal efforts of Herbert Hoover, chairman of the Commission for Relief of Belgium, in 1921 the construction of a new library building could be started. what is now the Ladeuzeplein and the reconstitution of a book collection.
