A few hundred meters from the village of El Golfo lies a poisonous green lake: Lago Verde. The name says it all, because that means nothing more or less than 'green more'. The lake was created in an old crater, so that water is still being transported underground to the lake. The green colour is not caused by sulphur or other substances found in volcanoes. The lake is so green because of the algae that live in the salt water. The bright green colour contrasts beautifully with the black sand and gravel between the lake and the sea. The steep walls around the beach and Lago Verde form half of the original crater from which the green lake originated. The other half was broken down by the sea over time.
