Tips for use

About ‘Landschaftspark Duisburg’ by Eus Driessen

The Duisburg Landscape Park is a public park in the German city of Duisburg. The centrepiece of the park is the ruins of a blast furnace complex that was decommissioned in 1985.

History
The blast furnace complex was built in 1902 by the “Rheinische Stahlwerke zu Meiderich bei Ruhrort” and was later taken over by the Thyssen Group. It was severely damaged during the Second World War, but was rebuilt in the 1950s. By 1985, the blast furnaces at the complex had become too small to remain profitable, and the complex was closed. Between 1991 and 2002, the site was converted into a public park.

Places of interest
Most of the buildings in the park are used for recreational purposes. For example, the former blast furnace 5 offers a good view over Duisburg and the surrounding area; visitors can go diving in the gas tank; and climbing walls have been installed and climbing routes mapped out in part of the ore bunkers. Furthermore, events are regularly organised in the park.

The site is included in the Route der Industriekultur, which takes visitors past industrial landmarks in the Ruhr region
