About ‘Last Selfie’ by Retrotimes

This work is relentlessly topical, precisely because it masquerades as history. Two young people float on an improvised raft in ice-cold water. Behind them, an icon of human hubris sinks. The ship is listing, the lights are still on, the night is relentless. And yet: they do not laugh, they do not cry — they pose. Peace signs. Camera up. Capturing what cannot be saved. The power of this image lies in the clash between tragedy and self-representation. Where you expect panic, you get performativity. Where you look for the will to survive, you see the urge to document. The work mercilessly exposes how even the most existential moments are filtered by the need to be seen. Not later. Now. Online. Visually, the tension is perfectly balanced. The warm light of the ship contrasts with the cold blue of the sea and ice. The historical setting clashes with the modern object in their hands. That one detail — the smartphone — pulls everything out of its time and places it unmistakably in ours. This is not a joke, but it is also not a classic drama. It is something more uncomfortable: recognition.

This work is not about the disaster itself, but about our relationship to it. About how proximity to the end does not automatically lead to reflection, but sometimes to content. About how memory is exchanged for proof: I was here. As a print, this is a sharp, ironic and confrontational statement. Not to shock, but to hold up a mirror.
