The Fenix shed, on Rotterdam's Katendrecht peninsula, was once called San Franciscoloods. The nearly 400-metre-long building was used by the Holland-America Line to embark the luggage of emigrants. Since a fire in the 1950s, two separate warehouses have risen from the ashes like a phoenix.
We see part of Fenix 1 here, at about eight o'clock in the evening, in late September. It is a beautiful evening, people are still sitting on the terrace on the quay. Apart from the Fenix Food Factory and other catering establishments, the hangar also houses Codarts and Conny Janssen Danst.
On top of the hangar has been a residential building for a few years now, some of whose residents also seem to be at home. The whole ensemble reflects in the water of one of Rotterdam's oldest major harbour basins: the Rijnhaven.
