This church is part of an abandoned monastery with a very long history. Founded in the Middle Ages, near the end of the 12th century, and occupied for about 600 years. Near the end of the 18th century it got closed due to constant complaints of the critical condition of the building.
Striking for the current state of the complex is the huge amount of vandalism, and in particular this church which is only a small part of the complex. The archeologic value is quite high. Historic pottery, wooden coffins and nails got destroyed and people have even tried to steal the big marmer Roman column in the altar you see on the picture. The heavy weight of the column probably prohibited the thieves to take it.
The bones, femur and skulls in the picture are human.
