This image is a night photograph of a street in Alkmaar. It is dark and a little foggy. Through the fog the street shimmers with wetness. An oncoming cyclist with lights on leaves a blue trail as he rides down the street. This blue light reflects on the wet pavers. The holiday month of December has just passed and the holiday lights in the trees along the canal are on. In the foreground, on the side of the canal, on the left, are bicycles parked in a bike rack. On the other side, right, houses are visible. In the background you can see part of a drawbridge. The image consists of warm, yellow, colors and cool, blue/purple, colors. Depth is created by the line of light and the street running away into the background.
On an evening walk through the city, I was looking for a nice place to take pictures. The parked bicycles caught my attention because the bicycle is the means of transport in the city and I wanted to do something with it. The composition was not entirely clear to me until the cyclist came into view. To create this image, I used a tripod and a slower shutter speed, which created the blue light trail. The cyclist was riding towards me from afar and passed me on the right side.
