About "Line or Passageule near Waterlandkerkje"

by Ellen Driesse

About the artwork

Photo was taken during a windless day of this beautiful piece of nature along the Passageule waterway between Oostburg and Waterlandkerkje in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

The Passageule starts as a creek about three km south of Biervliet, goes in an almost straight line to the west, where it flows 1 km south of IJzendijke. This is the canal that was completed in 1738. Then it flows past nature reserve De Plate south of Oostburg, where it connects with the Sint-Kruiskreek. From there it is called Uitwateringskanaal and runs northeast of Sluis and west of Retranchement almost along the Dutch-Belgian border to the north. It ends up in the sea via discharge sluices at Cadzand-Bad. This Uitwateringskanaal was dug in 1870.

Nowadays, numerous nature development projects covering several hundred hectares are taking place along the Passageule. These projects also take into account the cultural-historical value, especially the presence of remnants of the former Passageule Line.
