About "Lonely At The Top"

About the artwork

Red soldier beetle climbs to the top of a reed stalk to enjoy the day. Reeds are full of red soldier beetles from spring onwards and multiply explosively as the temperature warms up. You can easily predict a thunderstorm by the behaviour of the beetles: if the animals move en masse to the underside of leaves, a thunderstorm is imminent. The true mollusc beetles, as the name suggests, have soft shields. There are at least about 50 species in the Benelux, all very difficult to tell apart. They are also called soldier beetles, because when viewed vertically, they look like an old-fashioned soldier's uniform. The adult beetles mostly eat insects. Sometimes they actively hunt, but often they eat carrion. Most larvae eat snails and worms that they hunt in the litter layer. But there are also vegetarians and omnivores.
