About "Lot and his daughters - Abraham Bloemaert, 1624"

About the artwork

Lot (Hebrew: לוט) is a figure in the Tenach, the Bible, and the Qur'an (Lut), whose story is told in the book of Genesis and several surahs. Lot was a cousin of Abram or Ibrahim (later called Abraham).

Genesis 19 describes how Lot was visited in Sodom by two men, who are described as angels. He invited them to spend the night with him. When the male inhabitants of Sodom heard about this, they asked Lot to deliver the men to them, with the apparent intention of forcing them to have sex. Lot refused and offered them his two daughters instead of his guests.

Here the old man stands in the portrait with the scissor-clad girls. The front woman sits almost naked, topless me hips, belly, torso and breasts bared on the artwork. The other girl with a deep cleavage. In the background a well laid table, a still life in itself.

All in all a sexy and sensual picture with romance.

Abraham Cornelisz. Bloemaert (Gorinchem, Holland 25 December 1564 or 1566 - Utrecht, Netherlands 27 January 1651) was a Dutch painter in Utrecht. He is considered an important exponent of Northern Dutch Mannerism. He used radiant colors, and his figures are generous and elegant.
