The Lotus is an aquatic plant and the national flower of Vietnam. The plant consists of stems that continue to grow above the water, each bearing a leaf or flower. The Lotus roots in swampy soil and its water-repellent properties mean that its flowers and leaves will never look muddy. This is why the Lotus is the symbol of purity in Buddhism and Hinduism. In Vietnam, every part of the plant is used: either in cooking or for medicine.
