About ‘Madeira's luminous east’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

On the edge of Europe, where Madeira stretches out into the vastness of the Atlantic, Ponta de São Lourenço lies like an open book of fire and time. The volcanic peninsula bears its scars openly: ochre, rust red and ash grey tell stories of solidified embers and wind-shaped rock.
The cliffs plunge boldly into the sea, which crashes tirelessly against the rocks. White foam blooms on dark water, as if the ocean wants to soothe the rugged edges. And yet everything remains wild, untamed, true.
In the soft light of sunset, a golden hue settles over the cliffs. Punta de San Lorenzo seems to glow, as if remembering its fiery birth. The interplay of sun and rain gives rise to a rainbow – delicate and powerful at the same time. It stretches like a fleeting bridge between sky and sea, between storm and calm.
Here, the landscape breathes deeply. The wind carries salt and wanderlust, the waves speak in ancient rhythms. At this furthest tip of Portugal, Europe becomes quiet – and vast. You stand at the edge of the world and yet feel that everything is connected: light and water, stone and time, transience and hope.
