A landscape photo of the Hempenserpolder mill under the Frisian Wergea during a misty spring morning. This photo was planned so that the sun rose above the ditch.
In Friesland there are about 100 polder mills left, including this mill which is now a national monument. The mill is located on the outskirts of Leeuwarden and near the village of Wergea. Fortunately, the mill has been preserved and restored. The nice thing is that enthusiastic volunteer millers still run the mill and grind in the old-fashioned way. When there is enough wind and the weather is good, the mill turns the water from the polder to the reservoir. Another fun fact is that the Wetterskip Fryslân uses the mill to house an, unmanned, electrically powered pumping station to keep the water in the polder at the required level. For this purpose, sensors have been placed at the screw trough and the shoot.
It was a wonderful moment to be able to see the sunrise at this spot near the mill. The ground fog created a magical atmosphere. More photos of beautiful Friesland can be found in my shop.
