The salt pans of Makgadikgadi in the northeast of Botswana are an area as large as Portugal, but mainly uninhabited due to the harsh conditions. It covers 16,000 square kilometers of salt pans, as far as the eye can see. During the day one only sees the plains, at night hundreds of thousands of stars and the galaxy. Animals do live on the plains: buffalo and flamingos are regularly seen.
