About the artwork

La Gazette des beaux-arts is a French journal of art criticism and history, founded in 1859 and disappearing in 2002. This journal was a world reference in the field of art history for almost 150 years.

Here the naked legs, scrotum, hips, abdomen and bust of a man. The body is drawn bare and detailed in this illustration. The nudity of the male body, homo sapiens is cast in drawing in just black and white.

All in all a sexy and sensual erotic picture with romance.

Julius Garibaldi ('Gari') Melchers (Detroit, United States, August 11, 1860 - Fredericksburg, November 30, 1932) was an American painter. He was influenced by naturalism and impressionism. He spent much of his active life painting in the Netherlands. Melchers was the son of Julius Theodore Melchers, a sculptor of German origin. The painter mainly painted portraits and genre works, mostly everyday scenes with ordinary people. The painter paid much attention to details, especially to costumes. He often emphasised a certain religiosity in his work. The artist became a leading figure of what was later to become the Egmond School in Holland. In 1909, Melchers settled in Weimar, where he received an appointment at the Kunsthochschule.
