Little duck, of which the male has a striking and colourful plumage. The crown is purple, orange and green and a broad white eyebrow stripe runs from the eye to the neck. The mandarin duck has orange sideburns and orange feathers protruding above the abdomen. The breast is purple and the flanks are orange-brown. Female birds are grey-brown with only a small eyebrow line and spotted flanks. The mandarin duck is an exotic appearance that you would not expect in the Netherlands. Originally it is found in East Asia. But mandarin ducks are a popular addition to water bird collections because of their colourful and fine appearance. Escaped birds from such collections have been breeding in the Netherlands since the end of the last century. The male is strikingly drawn and has graceful orange feathers that protrude above the abdomen.
