Étaples (Dutch: Stapel) is a commune in the French Pas-de-Calais department (Hauts-de-France region), with a population of 11,177 (1999). The town is part of the arrondissement of Montreuil. Étaples lies on the Opal Coast, a name coined by the botanist and painter Édouard Lévêque (1857-1936) in 1911. The place name is of Old Dutch origin. The oldest surviving mention of the place name is from the year 1029 as: Stapulas. It is a noun and the place name refers to or is derived from the word stapelplaats (place that has the right to store and sell certain goods). Edgar, Pierre, Jozef Farasyn (Antwerp, 14 August 1858 - there, 22 March 1938) was a Belgian painter and watercolourist of seascapes, landscapes, townscapes, genre scenes and interiors and later fishermen. He was also an etcher, draughtsman and graphic artist. He became a founding member of the group "De XIII" in 1891 and a member of the very open art circle "Weest U Zelve" to promote Flemish influence on art.
