This mesmerising work depicts Japan's iconic Matsumoto Castle (Matsumoto-jo), one of the country's rare original castles and a National Treasure, captured at deep dusk, just before nightfall.
The sky just retains a soft, purple glow from the setting sun, contrasting beautifully with the deep blue of the night. The castle is now elegantly lit, making its imposing architecture and tiered roofs stand out even more dramatically against the darkening sky. The reflection of the illuminated castle in the mirror-smooth water of the moat is almost perfect, adding mesmerising symmetry and depth to the scene.
The lights of the city and the greenery in the background are gently visible, giving a sense of context and scale without distracting from the central majestic structure. This work exudes a sense of tranquillity, strength and timeless Japanese history.
