About the artwork

The disciples at Emmaus were the visitors to a celebration of the Easter feast at Emmaus, as described by the evangelist Luke and frequently depicted in Western painting.

Emmaus was a village in Judea 11½ kilometers from Jerusalem. According to Luke 24:13-35 Jesus appeared there on Easter to two disciples, who did not recognize him at first. One of the disciples at Emmaus, Kleopas, is mentioned by name.

The image of Christ, preceding in prayer, in conversation at table and in a group of people is attractive to paint. It is a domestic, human, and understandable scene while at the same time the miracle of the resurrection of the dead redeemer is the subject of the painting. In Protestant as well as in Catholic circles the visit to Emmaus was a popular theme.

Maurice Denis (Granville, 25 November 1870 - Paris, 13 November 1943) was a French painter. He was one of the founders of the group Les Nabis. Within formalism Denis' statement is often quoted: 'Consider that a painting, before it is a warhorse, a female nude or a genre scene, is first of all a flat surface with colours in a certain order.
