Maurice Utrillo, Montmartre, the agile rabbit by Atelier Liesjes

A vivid and historic cityscape in which Utrillo portrays the famous cabaret Le Lapin Agile - an image of popular life, artistic memory and visual brilliance.

🎨 What you see
A gently sloping street in Montmartre, flanked by houses with shutters and red chimneys.

Walking figures in early 20th-century clothes bring rhythm and movement to the scene.

Green trees add an organic touch to the urban setting.

The brushwork is loose and impressionistic, with a muted colour palette that evokes a nostalgic mood.

Although the building of Le Lapin Agile is not explicitly named in the image, the title refers to the famous cabaret that played a central role in the Montmartre of Utrillo's time.

🧩 Theme
Utrillo here depicts Montmartre as a place of artistic memory and popular culture - the cabaret as a symbol of bohemian life.

Le Lapin Agile was a meeting place for artists such as Picasso, Modigliani and Utrillo himself.

This work is a nostalgic tribute to the neighbourhood, where Utrillo found his artistic roots.

📍 Style and technique
Typical of Utrillo's interwar period: decorative touch, bright but muted colours, and a lighter approach than his "white period".

The brushwork is friendly and rhythmic, with an almost illustrative approach to cityscapes.

The composition is horizontal and balanced, with the street as a visual guide - an image of orientation and cultural resonance.

Maurice Utrillo (26 December 1883 - 5 November 1955) was a painter from France, born in Paris, lived in Montmartre and died in Dax. The artist worked mainly with Sober colours: Many greys, whites, ochres and browns - often with melancholic undertones. Furthermore, he worked with simplified forms: No theatrical perspectives or dramatic lighting, but a quiet, almost naive approach. His style was Post-impressionist.
