Max Pechstein, March Snow - The Railway Embankment, 1909 by Atelier Liesjes

A dynamic, expressionistic winter landscape in oil paint: a railway line (Bahndamm) with dark, angular electricity pylons and wires dominates the centre, against a rolling snowy landscape with muddy, brown paths, green bushes and a vague railway yard with carriages on the left. The sky is yellow-ochre with violet-blue clouds, the snow is off-white with green tones, and the ground is reddish-brown and green. The composition is asymmetrical with diagonal lines from the line and pylons giving depth and movement; signed ' "H.P. 09"'. Meaning This early work from 1909 (Brücke period) captures the raw transition from winter to spring in March ("Märzenschnee" – melting snow), symbolising transience and emerging vitality. The industrial railway contrasts with nature, expressing Pechstein's critique of modernity – a search for authentic emotion in the everyday. It depicts his Dresden surroundings, with a primitive, expressive style inspired by Van Gogh and Gauguin, as a celebration of change and primal power.
Technique Oil on canvas: thick, expressive brushstrokes with impasto for texture in snow and mud, bright, non-naturalistic colours (yellow sky, green snow, red ground) with strong contours and dynamic lines. Flat surfaces and contrasts create a rough, impulsive effect – typical of Pechstein's early Brücke style, with Fauvist colour and primitivism.
