Mei Qing (ca. 1623-1697) was an important Chinese painter, calligrapher and poet of the early Qing dynasty. As a representative of literati painting, he mainly created expressive landscape paintings, which were often inspired by his travels through the Huangshan Mountains. His works are characterised by dynamic compositions, bold brushstrokes and a personal, emotional interpretation of nature. Mei Qing combined painterly skill with poetic expression and is regarded as one of the leading artists of his time, who further developed the tradition of the Southern School in his own unique way.
