"In this provocative work, I have chosen to reinterpret a classic. I call it 'The Girl without the Pearl'. By leaving out the iconic pearl, I ask questions about identity and value, and confront the viewer with their own prejudices and expectations. What makes her less valuable or captivating?
The halftone background, a clear nod to modern graphic art, is at once an echo of antiquity and a leap into the future. It creates a rhythmic and almost hypnotic effect that anchors the whole piece in the contemporary world.
The white tulips, playfully placed on this background, bring their own message. They represent purity and impermanence, providing an interesting contrast to the girl, who is herself a kind of flower, plucked from her original context.
By bringing these elements together, I hope to start a dialogue about what it means to be both modern and timeless, and how we can see the artworks of the past through the lens of our current experiences and understanding."
