Mont Saint-Michel is a small rocky tidal island in France, situated in a large bay at the mouth of the Couesnon. The granite massif of Mont Saint-Michel has been awarded a medieval abbey. The spire of the abbey church is a statue of St Michael since 1898 hundred seventy meters above the bay. The island is about 1 km from the coast near the town of Avranches. It was originally a tidal island: it was land accessible at low tide, but at high tide it was surrounded by water. Today, there is a narrow bridge, with shuttle service to the island. Mont Saint-Michel, with its stepped streets, is only accessible to pedestrians.
In 1979, the Mont Saint Michel abbey was with complex and surrounding bay declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Mont Saint-Michel is the third tourist site in France after the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles, with each year more than 3.5 million visitors.
