Tom Simpson (30 November 1937 - 13 July 1967) was a British professional cyclist. At the time of the 1967 Tour de France, he was the undisputed leader of the British team. On the 13th stage of that race, he collapsed and died while climbing Mont Ventoux.
This is the memorial close to where he died and it has become a place of pilgrimage for many cyclists. Out of respect, many of them leave a water bottle at the memorial.
