About ‘Mosaic by Haar – Abstract female portrait’ by Arjen Roos

In *Mosaic of Hair*, I wanted to blend a female portrait with a world of colour, geometry and, above all, a wealth of patterns. The face is calm and almost still, whilst all around her an exuberant interplay of circles, lines, graphic motifs and organic structures unfolds. It is precisely this contrast that fascinates me: serenity set against visual abundance.

The hair forms, both literally and figuratively, the heart of the composition. Not traditional locks, but a mosaic of overlapping shapes in warm orange, ochre, red, cream and deep dark blue. The many decorative patterns extend into the background and clothing, causing the portrait and its surroundings to become increasingly intertwined. Up close, there is always something new to discover; from a distance, a powerful and harmonious silhouette emerges.

For this work, I combined various digital mixed-media techniques. I built up the image layer by layer, working with geometric shapes, textures, patterns, blocks of colour and digital painting techniques. That layering is important to me: the computer is not an end in itself, but my studio, where I combine, edit and reshape elements until everything falls into place.

‘Mosaic of Hair’ fits beautifully into a modern, eclectic or colourful interior. It is a striking statement piece for art lovers who appreciate modern portraiture, warm colours and a touch of retro-modernism.
