About ‘Mosque in China’ by Lisette van Peenen

The Great Mosque of Xi''an (Chinees: 西安大清真寺) staat in de Chinese stad Xi''an in Shaanxi Province. The city of Xi'''an was one of the easternmost cities on the Silk Road. The mosque is one of the oldest and most famous in China.

Construction began during the Tang dynasty, in the year 742. The mosque was built according to the principles of Chinese architecture, namely with several halls built in succession. The halls date from the 14th century and have been restored several times.

The same architectural style can be found in imperial architecture, including the Forbidden City in Beijing.
