Woman in Moss is inspired by Frida. The continuous brow and her determined gaze reflect her strength. As a lesbian woman, I experience Frida's work as an expression of freedom-a freedom she may not have had fully in her time, but which she was able to show in her art. I carry that sense of liberation and self-expression into my own work.
This image arose from a desire to create something surreal, with the contrasts between softness and hardness in human nature.
The work evokes a sense of struggle: man in nature, strong and determined, while the fragility of being human is visible in the soft texture of the moss. And the optical illusion of man in nature without additional material, such as clothing/wear.
