Mountains, James Reynolds & John Emslie (1851)

This work, titled "Mountains," was drawn and engraved by John Emslie and published by James Reynolds in 1851. It is a hand-colored engraved view representing the comparative heights of mountains and volcanoes from around the world. The image is part of a school atlas series known as "Geological Diagrams," which includes various geographical phenomena.

The primary subject matter includes various mountains and volcanoes from different continents. Notable features such as Ben Nevis, Snowdon, and Skiddaw from the British Isles are illustrated. European mountains from the Pyrenees and the Alps, as well as peaks from Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, and Russia, are depicted. The African, North American, and South American ranges, including the Andes, are also represented. Volcanoes such as Mount Etna, Vesuvius, and several from Quito are included, highlighting both their geographical distribution and their relative elevations.
