Mrs van Lijnen by Color Square

The work depicts a stylised female portrait in which fashion, pattern and organic forms merge. The face is almost entirely omitted: only a warm, terracotta-coloured skin-like form, a long neck and two striking earrings give the female figure her identity. Consequently, all attention shifts to the enormous, fanning shape surrounding the head. This shape can be interpreted in various ways. It is reminiscent of an exuberant headscarf, a voluminous hairstyle or an exotic flower, composed of undulating bands in black, cream, beige, ochre and muted olive green. The stripes radiate outwards from the centre, creating a strong rhythm. It is striking that the same interplay of lines is repeated in the clothing at the bottom. This makes the headdress and clothing appear visually connected, lending the portrait an almost sculptural quality.
The large round earring and the elongated pendant are small but significant accents. Their warm rust and orange tones break up the dark interplay of lines and enhance the elegant, fashionable look. The background also deserves attention: subtle brushstrokes in cream and grey-green create depth without competing with the figure.
The work strikes a balance between figurative and abstract art. The absence of eyes, nose and mouth renders the woman anonymous and, precisely because of this, powerful: it is not her individual face, but her posture, silhouette and style that define her presence. A distinctly decorative portrait with a warm, modern and refined appearance.
