The nutria (also called swamp beaver) originates from South America and was introduced to Europe by humans as a fur animal.
At first glance, nutria resemble beavers, but their tails are round and not flattened as in beavers. The nutria can live for over ten years. With a body weight of about 9 kg, it grows up to 70 cm long and has a tail length of about 45 cm. Its fur is predominantly reddish brown, greyish brown on the belly. Breeding has also produced animals with white fur. Nutrias have webbed hind feet, which enable them to move easily in water. The large nail teeth are strikingly orange.
