The olive is the fruit of the olive tree (Olea europaea), a tree of the olive family (Oleaceae). The genus Olea has about 20 species with a large distribution area, mainly in the Old World. The olive itself is eaten, olive oil is extracted from its kernel and flesh. The olive is traditional and still today one of the most important agricultural products of, among others, the Mediterranean countries.
