In southeastern England there are many of these somewhat strange-looking buildings. They are the so-called "oasthouses," structures that were traditionally used to dry hops for local beer production. Today, many are no longer used as such and have been converted into homes and offices. But they remain a typical part of the gently undulating landscape of the southern counties.
