In the second half of the nineteenth century, sea and coastal landscapes became a recurrent theme in French art. Realists, open air painters and impressionists found their way to the coast to depict the waves, sky and light. Maurice Denis belonged to the group "Les Nabis". The group's aesthetic ideal was shaped by the new art impulses of the late nineteenth century - including contact with symbolism and artists such as Paul Gauguin. Their use of colour and free manner of painting also shows similarities with early modernism and the abstract painting that developed at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Maurice Denis (Granville, 25 November 1870 - Paris, 13 November 1943) was a French painter. He was one of the founders of the group Les Nabis. Within formalism, Denis' statement is often quoted: 'Consider that a painting, before it is a warhorse, a female nude or a genre scene, is first of all a flat surface with colours in a certain order.
