About "Oedipus solves the mystery of the Sphinx, FRANZ VON STUCK, 1891"

by Natasja Tollenaar

About the artwork

Oedipus is a figure from Greek mythology. Oedipus is a son of Laios (king of Thebes) and Iokaste.

This sphinx kills anyone who can't solve the given riddle. The riddle is: "Which creature walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon and three in the evening?"

Oedipus succeeds in solving the riddle (A human being 'walks' as a baby on all fours, as an adult on two legs and when he gets old he walks on three legs: two legs and a walking stick). In this way he frees the city from the monster. He is crowned king.

Edipus is here as a man in traditional dress topless explaining his theory. The sphynx lies on her belly, leaning on her muscular arms and breasts and looks surprised at the guy.

Franz knight von Stuck, born as Franz Stuck, (Tettenweis (Lower Bavaria), 23 February 1863 - Munich, 30 August 1928) was a German symbolist painter .
