The old gate in Zutphen, also known as the Berkel Gate, is an impressive piece of history in this beautiful city. The gate dates back to the 14th century and served as one of four city gates to protect the city from invaders. The structure is made of brick and has a robust appearance. The towers on both sides of the gate have battlements and loopholes, recalling a time when the city was under constant threat of attack. The old gate has had various functions over time. For instance, it has served as a prison, as well as a dwelling house and warehouse. Today, the old gate is a popular attraction for tourists and residents of the city.
