126 square kilometers are drained by the Tegeler Fließ, a 14.5-kilometer-long river that meanders through the Berlin landscape largely in a natural state before flowing into Lake Tegel. Extensive meadows as well as alder and gray willow bushes line the river and form one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Berlin. The section of the river valley between Arkenberge and the Humboldt Mill has been declared an FFH and SPA area. Thanks to its structural richness, the area is home to a rich bird life, including several EU-protected species. It is an important habitat for amphibian and reptile species. The Natura 2000 site includes the LSG Tegeler Fließ and three nature reserves (NSG Niedermoorwiesen am Tegeler Fließ, NSG Kalktuffgelände am Tegeler Fließ, both in Pankow, and NSG Tegeler Fließ in Reinickendorf).
