About the artwork

The Oradour-sur-Glane Massacre took place on 10 June 1944 in the French town of Oradour-sur-Glane. The village was surrounded and eventually destroyed that day by the first regiment 'Der Führer' of the 2. SS-Panzer-Division Das Reich. In this raid, 642 people were killed. Only six people survived the massacre. The massacre was an act of revenge. The trigger does mention an action by the French resistance on 8 June 1944. Then, in Saint-Junien, a town near Oradour, a railway bridge was blown up. Two German soldiers, including SS-Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe, who was a personal friend of SS-Sturmbannführer Diekmann, were allegedly killed. Another reading is that Kämpfe was kidnapped by the resistance. After his service vehicle was found empty, the SS division went on a massive search for him and his driver.
