Hibiscus is a genus of about 200 to 220 species of flowering plants of the family Malvaceae, which occur naturally in Mediterranean, subtropical and tropical regions around the world. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, woody shrubs and small trees. The leaves are arranged alternately, single, oval to lanceolate with often a serrated or lobed edge. The flowers are large, striking and trumpet-shaped. The colours vary from white, pink, red, purple or yellow and are 4.15 cm wide. The fruits are dry, pentagonal box fruits, which contain several seeds per box. The seeds emerge when the box fruit unfolds at full ripeness.
