The two younger women would immediately have been recognized as courtesans by contemporaries. Their exuberantly braided hair falls over their bare shoulders and the loosened body of the central figure is sensually provocative. She admires her reflection in the mirror held by an older woman with a darker complexion, who may be their matchmaker. However, the mirror also refers to the transience of physical beauty. The graceful character of the box-shaped interior contributes to the spatial ambiguity and the decorative appearance of the painting.
The front girl has her cleavage open so the breasts are bare and she is in fact topless. The other young woman is also getting dressed.
Paris Bordone (Treviso, Italy, ca. 1500 - Venice, January 19, 1571) was an Italian painter of the Venetian School in the period of the Italian Renaissance. His numerous portraits, mainly of women, have an enchanting appeal because of the beautiful colorite he uses. His idealized female figures look elegant and refined.
