About ‘Pastel de Nata’ by Ronne Vinkx

Pastéis de Belém or pastéis de nata (literally: pastry from Belém/cream pastry; singular: pastel de Belém/nata) is one of the most famous sweets in Portuguese cuisine. It is available in many cafés and pastry shops in Portugal, but the original recipe is secret. It is owned by the Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon. Traditionally eaten hot, pastéis de Belém are flambéed with cinnamon and cane sugar. It can be compared to crème brûlée or crema catalana. The first pastéis de Belém were sold in Belém as early as 1837, which at the time was still far outside the city. The pastéis grew to become one of Portugal's most popular delicacies. In some shops in Belgium and the Netherlands, the pastéis are also available.
