About "Pax and Justitia - anonymus vicinty of Hans von Aachen, ca 1600"

About the artwork

Lesbian-looking scene where two women kiss each other on the mouth.

Pax was a Roman goddess. She was the personification of peace, more specifically of the quiet and peaceful state of a country, later understood more as an opposition to the deities of war. She was represented with an olive branch and in her other hand ears of corn.

Lady Justice was originally a Roman goddess and later the personification of the law. The woman is usually depicted with scales in her left hand.

The women of peace and justice stand as two lesbians on this queer plate which radiates love and affection.

All in all a sexy and sensual picture with romance.

Hans von Aachen (Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, situated on the Rhine, Germany, 1552 - Prague, Czech Republic, 4 March 1615) was a German Mannerist painter of portraits, genre pieces and mythological and religious scenes.

In 1588 he started at the court in Munich, Bavaria. Von Aachen stayed in Vienna from 1592 to 1601 and then went to Prague, where he continued to paint for Emperor Rudolf II, and later for Emperor Matthias I, on commission.

Von Aachen derived his subjects mainly from religion, mythology and allegory. His style was somewhere between the colourful Venetian way and Dutch Realism with a dash of Florentine Mannerism.
