About the artwork

In this gentle allegory of peace by Louis Jean François Lagrenée, Mars, the Roman god of war, throws back the rich green bed curtains that frame the scene. As the drapery parts flow in, the morning light enters to reveal the shape of the sleeping Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Mars stares at her, completely captivated by her beauty. Her love has tempered his ferocious character and his shield and sword lie abandoned on the floor. Following the bliss of the lovers, a pair of white doves, symbolising peace, built a nest in the helmet of Mars. Lagrenée created his most beautiful works, including this small, jewel-like painting, around 1770. The sumptuous draperies, the delicate play of light over fabric and skin and the rich, subdued palette combine to create a captivatingly beautiful image.

Both the man and the woman in this nude portrait are sexy, erotic and completely naked, only covered by a single sheet. Because of this, the girl's hip, belly and tit are visible and the man's torso.

Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée (Paris, France, 21 January 1725 - 19 June 1805) was a French painter. In July 1804 Napoleon's painter received the appointment to the Order of the Legion of Honour. He was one of the painters who initiated the transition from rococo to neoclassicism.
