About ‘Pearl of Nothing’ by Franka Poulain

A single opened oyster lies like a precious jewel on a dark, richly decorated plate. *Pearl of Nothing* plays on the age-old association between the oyster, luxury and hidden beauty. Yet the expected pearl is missing. The plate is large, glossy and almost ceremonial, whilst the centre remains strikingly empty. This contrast makes the image both elegant and slightly absurd. Dark green, silver, soft pink and warm brown tones lend the work a classical richness, yet the minimalist composition keeps it contemporary. A still life about expectation and desire: perhaps we are constantly searching for something valuable that need not be there at all. Beautiful, alluring and just uncomfortable enough to keep you looking at it for longer.
