About the artwork

Schloss Winkel, also spelled Winkl, is a listed building in Obermais in Merano.

The original farmhouse was sold in 1612 or 1613 by Quaranta zu Rametz to Eckhart von Rosenberg (servant of Maximilian III the German master). He had the house extended, but moved a little later to his castle Rosenstein in Merano. In 1632 Claudia de 'Medici bought the estate of Bartlmä Mulet. Count Zenobio followed as owner, from 1679 to 1813 the von Spaur family, an aristocratic South Tyrolean family, owned the estate.

In 1813 Urban Pitsch bought the castle with his numerous properties. Pitsch became a wealthy wine merchant, the estate was transferred to a foundation after the death of his eponymous son. In 1934 the Bolzano wine merchant Antonio Cembran became the owner, Winkel remained with his heirs until 2004.

Meran (Italian: Merano) is the second largest town in the Italian autonomous province of Bozen-South Tyrol after the capital Bozen.

Peder Mørk Mønsted (Balle Mølle near Grenå, Denmark, December 10, 1859-20 June 1941) was a Danish realist painter. He is best known for his landscape paintings in a style of realism. His favourite motifs are snowy winter landscapes, still water and forests.

At a young age he began to take painting lessons at the art academy in Aarhus. From 1875 to 1879 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
