About ‘Pennantfish @ Komodo Island, Indonesia’ by Travel Tips and Stories

The pennantfish (genus Heniochus) is a striking, colourful reef fish that is commonly found in Komodo National Park. They owe their name to their extremely elongated, white, flag-like fin rays.

Characteristics of the Pennantfish
Appearance: They have a laterally compressed, triangular body. The base colour is bright white, interrupted by thick, diagonal black stripes. The dorsal fin tapers into a graceful, long white thread, and their tail and pectoral fins are bright yellow.
Size: The fish usually reaches a maximum length of 15 to 21 centimetres.
Behaviour & Diet: They are generally calm, shy fish that feed on zooplankton and small invertebrates. Young specimens (juveniles) often act as ‘cleaner fish’ and eat parasites from other fish.
Species Found in Komodo
When diving and snorkelling in Komodo National Park, you will mainly see two species:
The Common Bannerfish (Heniochus acuminatus): This species has two broad black stripes and often swims in small groups or pairs.
The Schooling Bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes): Very similar to the Common Bannerfish, but slightly rounder and gathers in huge, impressive schools in the current.
Spotting locations in Komodo
The bannerfish thrives in waters with strong, nutrient-rich currents. The best diving and snorkelling spots in Komodo to admire them are:
Castle Rock: Known for its large schools.
Crystal Rock: Known for its clear water and multi-layered fish formations.
Golden Passage: A well-known drift dive where larger bannerfish swim in the shelter.
