Portrait of mister Charpentier. Gustave Charpentier (Dieuze, 25 June 1860 - Paris, 18 February 1956) was a French musician and composer.
The son of a poor baker, Charpentier could only study music with support from the municipality. At the Paris conservatory he studied with Jules Massenet and others. He started his career with orchestral works. In 1887 he won the Prix de Rome with his cantata/scene lyrique Didon. His greatest success was the opera Louise (1900). Its sequel Julien (1913) could not match this success. After these operas he composed very little. He occupied himself with charity. In that context he founded the folk conservatory Mimi Pinson, a monument to the heroine of the novel Scènes de la bohème by Henri Murger, the heroine in the operas of Giacomo Puccini and Ruggiero Leoncavallo.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, France, 25 February 1841 - Cagnes-sur-Mer, 3 December 1919) was a French impressionist painter.
