Pile heads are unique to the Zeeland coast The beaches cannot be imagined without the single or double rows of piles. They are breakwaters to prevent the beach from disappearing. On Walcheren and Schouwen, there are at least about a hundred thousand piles. You also come across them on the Westerschelde.
All kinds of organisms grow on the poles and when they fall dry at low tide you can smell the unmistakable salty sea air.
