On 24 November 1973, a US Dc-3 crashed on the black sand beach of Sólheimasandur near the town of Vík in southern Iceland. All crew members survived the crash. The exact reason for the crash is not known, although some sources suggest that the plane ran out of fuel after the pilot switched to the wrong fuel tank. The wreckage still lies on the beach near the sea. Although the wreckage is missing some pieces. The wings and tail section, for example, are gone.
