Project Bakkie was born out of Marsha Mormon's personal search for her roots. Marsha and her husband Bas Spek found Gouvernement documents in the archives confirming that to Marsha's ancestor the Reynsfort plantation was ceded in ownership. The interest in the story of this ancestor (born into slavery) became quite a quest with unusual finds in the Bakkie area and the plantations on Warappakreek.
Plantation Bakkie was almost abandoned and in poorly maintained condition. From 2007 until now, investments have been ongoing and Bakkie is now a beautiful liveable village with nice residents.
